Indication:

This drug is used with other HIV medications to help control HIV infection. It helps to decrease the amount of HIV in your body so your immune system can work better. This lowers your chance of getting HIV complications (such as new infections, cancer) and improves your quality of life. Viracept (Nelfinavir)belongs to a class of drugs known as protease inhibitors.

Mechanism of action:

Viracept (Nelfinavir)inhibits the HIV viral proteinase enzyme which prevents cleavage of the gag-pol polyprotein, resulting in noninfectious, immature viral particles.

Dosage and Administration:

Use Viracept (Nelfinavir) as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

         Take Viracept (Nelfinavir)by mouth with a meal.

         If you are taking didanosine, take it at least 1 hour before or more than 2 hours after nelfinavir.

         Take Viracept (Nelfinavir)on a regular schedule to get the most benefit from it. Taking it at the same time each day will help you remember to take it.

         Continue to take Viracept (Nelfinavir)even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.

Side effects:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Diarrhea; gas; loss of appetite; nausea; stomach pain.

Precaution:

Before taking Viracept (Nelfinavir), tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: diabetes, heart problems (coronary disease, heart attack), lipid problems (high cholesterol or triglycerides/fats), hemophilia, liver problems.

Store:

Store Viracept (Nelfinavir)at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C), in its original container. Store away from heat, light, and moisture. Keep Viracept (Nelfinavir)out of the reach of children and away from pets.
